Munawwar Rana is a writer of Urdu language . He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014 for Shahdaba , a poem composed by him. He lives in Lucknow.
During the partition of India-Pakistan, many of his close relatives and family members left the country and went to Pakistan . But despite the communal tension, Munawwar Rana's father considered it his duty to stay in his country. Munawar Rana's early education took place in Calcutta (new name Kolkata). Apart from Ghazals, Rana has also written memoirs. The popularity of his writings can be gauged from the fact that his works have been translated into languages other than Urdu.
