Hemlata is an Indian playback singer who has mainly performed in Hindi films. She was born in Hyderabad, India, on August 16, 1954. Early in the 1970s, Hemlata began her singing career. She later rose to prominence as one of the top female playback singers during the 1970s and 1980s.

She has performed songs in a variety of Indian languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, and Malayalam. Hemlata is well renowned for having a lovely, musical voice, and she has contributed her voice to many popular Hindi movie songs.

The songs Morni Re Morni from the film Lamhe, Megha Re Megha Re from the film Pyaasa Sawan, Tere Liye Palkon Ki Jhalar from the film Harjaee, and Bholi Bhali Ladki from the film Sabse Bada Khiladi are a few of her most well-known songs.

Throughout her career, Hemlata has been recognized with numerous honors and nominations, including the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the song Morni Re Morni. Even though she has been less active lately, she nevertheless made a significant impact on the Indian music scene.

Hemlata was born and raised in Calcutta, and at the age of 13, she started working in the Bollywood industry. Pandit Jaichand Bhatt, who was a singer, music teacher, performer, and musician, is her father's name. At age 12, her father, who later became her music teacher, began paying frequent visits to Bombay to teach her music. When her father performs in Bengali, she often sings his original songs, and her mother used to support her. She has wowed audiences with a number of her theatrical appearances and has received countless accolades and honors for her vocals.

She could not express her love of music or her desire to learn how to sing because her father opposes her intention to pursue a career in singing. She used to perform covertly in Pooja Pandals, but becoming a vocalist was really in her destiny. Hemlata married Yogesh Bali in 1973; they later separated in 1988. Yogesh Bali is the brother of well-known Indian actress Yogeeta Bali. Hemlata has a son named Aditya Bali.

Hemlata began singing when she was a small child. Her father, Pandit Jasraj, a renowned classical performer from the Mewati Gharana, gave her instruction in classical music. She immediately became known for her melodic voice and variety because of her remarkable talent and perseverance. Even though singing was forbidden, she began singing for the first time at a performance that Gopal Mallick, a disciple of her father, organized. Gopal discovered her vocal skills and provided her the opportunity to play alongside legendary musicians like Mohammad Rafi, Kishore Kumar, and more. 

In 1979, the Bollywood movie Anjana Safar marked Hemlata's debut as a playback vocalist. Hemlata's deep voice was first known to a larger audience when the movie's song Baagon Mein Bahar Hai became an immediate hit. Throughout her career, she worked with a variety of music producers, including Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Rajesh Roshan, Ravindra Jain, and Kalyanji-Anandji.

Hemlata showed her adaptability by singing in a variety of regional languages in addition to Hindi cinema. She contributed her voice to songs in a variety of languages, including Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and more. She was able to increase her fan base and reach audiences in many regions of India as a result.

Tu Jo Mere Sur Mein
