Safin Hasan is a well-known Indian civil servant, IPS officer, government employee, media personality, social worker, and entrepreneur from Palanpur, Gujarat, India. This gifted individual is well-known for achieving an All India Rank (AIR) of 570 in his civil service exams. Hasan is now an IPS officer from the Gujarat cadre. In 2018, he made headlines by becoming India’s youngest IPS officer at the age of 22.
Achievement
Safin Hasan is another such living example who cleared the UPSC examination at an extremely young age and by doing that, he made another record of being the youngest IPS officer in the country. He cleared his examination in his first attempt at the extremely young age of 22 years.
Safin Hasan was born and brought up on 21 July 1995 in Kanodar village of Palanpur district, Gujarat in a financially deficit household so his early life was not very smooth sailing. His childhood is a product of the struggles a common lower-middle-class family faces throughout their life, scrimping for money, food, and basic essentials to survive in India to even keep the members of the family well and alive.
Schooling and Education
Safin did his schooling at the SKM high school in Palanpur, Gujarat, and then shifted to Ascent School of Science in Palanpur, Gujarat which was an English-medium school, for higher studies. Further, he pursued Btech in Electronics and Communications from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Institute of Technology, Surat, Gujarat. During his early education, Hasan studied in a state board from a Gujarati-medium school.
He was a scholar student so after scoring 92% in 10th he chose the science stream in 11th. He started studying English in 11th grade. His parents worked as menial labourers and did small odd jobs around the village to get by and might not have been able to pay for their son’s studies, however,
Hasan was always a bright child with a zeal for knowledge and studies. He received many scholarships and fee concessions from educational institutes due to his amazing scores.
Inspiration and Role Model
Once a collector visited his school and Safin was awe-struck by the way the IAS officer as a person commanded so much respect and had so much security around him. Even his school principal treated him differently.
The little boy returned home and asked around what was so special about the visitor and he was told that the guest was an IAS officer and that he worked to solve problems for common people so everyone treated him like a king. He was told that being in civil services is a respectable job and it needs sheer dedication and hard work to be one. From there Safin decided that he wanted to be an IAS officer.
Struggles and Preparation for UPSC
Besides all the hard work his parents put into his education Safin also received timely assistance from strangers including local businessman Hussain Polra and his wife Raina Polra. They spent money from their own pocket to fund Safin’s two-year stay in the national capital, including the fees of a coaching institute, his travel, and lodgings for his civil services preparation.
His expenses for civil services and examination were also borne by a couple named Husainbhai and Jarinaben. When he was in Delhi preparing for his exams, he frequently used to meet IAS and IPS officers for guidance. He treats these people who helped him unconditionally achieve his dreams as a family even though they share no actual blood ties.
The UPSC Attempts
In 2017 when he was on his way to appear for his UPSC written exam, he met with an accident and got severely injured. But he still went on with the examination. After the exam, he had to be admitted to the hospital with heavy injuries for which he even had to go through numerous surgeries and physiotherapy sessions in his injured knees and numerous other body parts. But his efforts and determination paid off and he secured an All India Rank of 570. Prior to his interview, he faced many medical ailments due to which he had to keep flying in and back from Delhi to Gujarat.
However, he appeared for his interview on the scheduled date surviving all the medical complications and came out to be the second-highest scorer in the interview. With his score, he got selected as IPS on his second UPSC attempt.
Although he always wanted to be in administrative services, he still joined the police training academy as he just wanted to serve the country. And by doing so, he proved his dedication towards the exam that he appeared in, that despite having met with an accident, he went on with his exam and even went to give his interview for the examination and cleared both of them & served as a great example for all the people out there.
